Mac mini vs mini PC for your AI agent
Updated 2026-10-27
The Mac mini is the box many people reach for first when they set up an always-on agent. Is it the right buy, or is a Windows/Linux mini PC better? It depends on whether the model runs in the cloud or on the box.
The short version
| Mac mini | x86 mini PC | |
|---|---|---|
| Starting price (official) | $899 (16GB unified (up to 32GB)) | $385 and up configured; barebones from $263 |
| Memory | Unified and soldered; you choose it at purchase | Often SO-DIMM (upgradeable); AI chips use soldered LPDDR5x |
| OS | macOS (Apple apps, iMessage, Shortcuts) | Linux or Windows; Docker-native; some ship with OpenClaw preinstalled |
| Power | 155W max continuous (Apple spec) | Rarely published by makers |
| Local-model speed (published) | M5 Pro 24GB: 73.9 tok/s, Qwen3-30B-A3B (IQ3_XXS) (source) | HX 370: 18.3 tok/s, Qwen3.5-35B-A3B (Q4_K_XL) (source) |
The two benchmarks use different models, quantizations and backends, so treat them as rough signals, not a head-to-head.
Pick a Mac mini if…
- You want your agent to use macOS-only things: iMessage, Apple Notes, Shortcuts, or the Mac desktop apps.
- You want a quiet, low-fuss box with Apple's published power ceiling.
- You plan to run ~30B local models, and the M5 Pro's memory bandwidth is worth the price to you.
Pick a mini PC if…
- Your agent calls a cloud model, so you only need a reliable always-on Linux box. That costs far less than a Mac mini.
- You want to upgrade RAM or storage later, or run Docker, Home Assistant and the agent on one box.
- You want 64–128GB for local models for less than Apple charges (Strix Halo boxes; see local-AI beasts).
