Best boxes to run an AI agent for under $300
Updated 2026-10-27
Honest answer first: in late 2026, the memory shortage has pushed mini PC prices up, and almost nothing complete costs under $300 on an official store. For a cloud-model agent (OpenClaw or similar calling Claude, GPT or Gemini), you don't need much: 8–16GB of RAM, an SSD, and low idle power. Here is what actually fits the budget.
Complete under $300
| Box | Maker | RAM | From | Tier | Benchmark |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Raspberry Pi 5 (8GB) Broadcom BCM2712, 4x Cortex-A76 @ 2.4GHz |
Raspberry Pi | 8GB LPDDR4X | $175* | Cloud-model agent | 4.4 tok/s |
The Raspberry Pi 5 8GB price is from a third-party report, not Raspberry Pi's own page, and the board price excludes the power supply, case and storage.
Barebone under $300 (add your own RAM and SSD)
Barebone kits are the cheapest way into an x86 box, but RAM prices are high right now, so a barebone plus RAM and an SSD can end up costing more than the configured model. Compare before you buy.

Our take
If you only need a cloud-model agent, a barebone N-series or Ryzen box with RAM you already own is the best value. The Pi is the lowest sticker price but needs extras, and the 16GB Pi at $305 no longer undercuts mini PCs.
